What is Mat Pilates and how does it work?
Pilates is a highly effective and time-efficient full body workout that will strengthen your core, improve flexibility and contribute towards long term health.
Through low impact, body weight exercises that bring balance to our whole bodies in a relaxing environment, Pilates is a great form of exercise for everyone and for all abilities. Often we use resistance bands, weighted balls and other small equipment to build strength and stability.
-
What are the benefits of Mat Pilates?
Research shows that Pilates can aid the management of back pain, post-surgery rehabilitation, menopause symptoms, osteoporosis, pelvic floor strength, balance, cardio-vascular health and weight management.
As well as being a rehabilitative form of exercise, pilates can improve core strength, flexibility and posture. Through our years of experience, we often hear from our clients that they experience relief from stress and improve their body awareness.

My Mum and I attended Formation Physiotherapy for a Reformer Pilates evening class with Emma. The studio is intimate and inviting which created a very personalised experience. Emma is so knowledgeable and able to make tweaks and give advice to ensure we both got the best out of our class. I felt amazing afterwards and really look forward to our next session- my mum was a beginner and it was perfect for her. Couldn’t recommend Formation Physio and Emma highly enough!!

Mat Pilates is done on a mat using body weight for resistance, sometimes with small props like resistance bands, Pilates rings, or light weights.
Reformer Pilates uses a sliding carriage, springs, and straps to create resistance and assist with controlled movements.
Whether mat Pilates or reformer Pilates is better depends on your goals, fitness level, and personal preferences — both are highly effective. Our team of physiotherapists are more than happy to chat with you and direct you towards the right kind of pilates for you.
